Anna Quindlen discusses how America is similar to a quilt. The United States is made up of different cultures that are brought together and living on one land, or part of one quilt. Although America is known for its diverse religions, languages, and races, our country is filled with people who consider themselves better than others. Instead of being patriotic and embracing our countries differences, Americans complain about having immigrants as opposed to tolerating them. As much as we are different, we are also alike. Many immigrants are starting lives in America exactly how our ancestors did. Another message Quindlen discusses is how America will come together and unify after a tragedy, such as a war or the Terrorist attack on September 11th. Unfortunately, once time passes after a tragedy, Americans seem to separate into their own subdivided territories based on their diverse cultures.
I agree with Anna Quindlen because America is filled with different people, much like a quilt is filled with different patterns. However people still seem to judge others based on their culture, or background. When a tragedy occurs in our country it is almost a blessing because it brings us together and allows everyone to see and treat each other equally. Although this unity will not last long, our country doesn't completly separate themselves like they did before. Some communities become more patriotic. Unfortunatly, those communites who don't unify continue being prejudice and some women are still seen as housekeepers. Despite how different we are from one another, staying unified and not judging people based on their culture will truly make America a land where all men are created equal.

I couldnt agree more with your last sentence in the first paragraph, after a tragedy has seemed to disperse and time has passed we each go back to living in our own little world where no one really thinks much of anyone but themselves.
ReplyDeleteI wrote my blog post on the same essay, and I too agree with what Quindlen says. Everyone says America is like a melting pot, but I think that a quilt is a better description. We don't always flow together easily, instead we live together side-by-side with a lot of differences and hate towards each other. But once we are in a time of need our nation becomes a united front and we give people the support they need. I also agree with what you said, this 'togetherness' only lasts for a while, when it should be eternal.
ReplyDeletethis statement was written from a different POV than i wrote, although this summary makes a lot of sense. The author does indeed point out and recognizes the different cultures that live in America, and they do have their differences. great summary.
ReplyDeleteI agree that America is like a Quilt as well because we do live together but Americans do not seem to like the fact that there are diverse cultures among us but are force in a way to deal and live on with their lives. Also I agree with what you said about America coming together to get through tragedy but that eventually everything goes back to the way it was before the tragedy.
